Enjoy Outdoor Yoga

Enjoy the ease of an outdoor yoga practice this summer! : )

All you need is an outdoor mat, blanket or chair and a sweet spot on the Earth. : )
This practice connects us more deeply to Mother Earth and the traditional practice of yoga outdoors.

Allow yourself to simply breathe... and move into yoga poses that suit your body in the moment. Also enjoy some seated meditation, and final relaxation / savasana lying on the Earth. Be ease-y and allow yourself to enjoy your practice.

Practicing outdoors allows us to feel a sacred connection with ourselves and all life... all one in the circle. The spirit of yoga is union. Allow yourself to feel this union of body, mind and spirit.

May you enjoy the grace of an outdoor practice.

with yourself and
others today.

 

Loving-Kindness Meditation

Enjoy a daily meditation practice...

Come into a comfortable seated position - relax your shoulders, soften your belly, and gently close your eyes. Simply breathe. Lengthen your exhales, and feel your body begin to relax more deeply. Come into an easy, natural breath. Focus your attention on the breath - simply feel the sensations as breath moves in and out of your body. If your mind begins to wander, gently return your focus to your breath.

Share Metta - loving kindness with yourself and other beings:

  • See yourself sitting or standing in front of you now, and share loving-kindness with yourself: "May I be happy, healthy and live with ease." Witness yourself receiving this loving-kindness fully.
  • Next, share this loving-kindness with others in your life.
  • Expand this loving-kindness outwards... allow it envelop all of Mother Earth, all people, all animals, plants/trees, waters, sky, sun, moon, stars... all life. Share: "May all beings be happy, healthy and live with ease."

Meditation is a powerful gateway to expanded awareness, insight, peace, and well-being. Even a 10min daily practice can be very beneficial.

EARTH Friendly Living Tips

This year, I've been exploring a zero plastic, and zero waste life : )

I'm happy to share some inspiration...

for everything you buy and dispose of, consider how it affects Mother Earth (the land, waters, and animal/plant family).
Let's simplify and create more harmonious, respectful relations with the Earth and all life.

Join me in simplifying... pledge to go #plasticfree #plasticless

Some simple practices:

  1. Pledge to Carry your own Cup' (stainless steel or glass drinking container) and eliminate single-use paper/plastic cups and plastic bottles. I use a double-jacketed ss container for the last 8 yrs that's great for cold and hot liquids!

  2. Carry your own produce/bulk reusable cotton bags and totes.
    Eliminate single-use plastic bags and packaging. Browse a local vendor: Green Ninja.

  3. Carry your own reusable food container and cutlery for eating away from home. I like to use a simple stainless steel container and bamboo 'spork' : )

  4. Shop at local Farmer's Markets, join a community garden, or grow your own food. Support organic. Choose local 'slow food' - food as close to the source (Earth) as possible. This is a healthier choice for you and all life!

  5. Buy less. Let's create a 'new economy' based on true well-being and compassionate community.

  6. Slow down, take daily walks and be an Earth Steward. Share loving-kindess with the Earth and all life as you walk in appreciation. Cultivate a mind free of anger & judgement, and share loving-kindness and thanks.
    Also practice earth stewardship by picking up litter, educating others, and advocating for change, eg., eliminate plastic bags, plastic bottles, plastic packaging, foster community clean-up efforts, community gardens, carshares, and more. Sometimes I feel sad to see the recurring, increasing pattern of litter on the land and waters everywhere I walk, but I know with awareness this modern 'disposable, expedient lifestyle' can shift into greater balance.

See and feel Mother Earth as a living being, like yourself. How can we live more gently on her? Be the change.

Just as we cultivate awareness and balance within ourselves, we can cultivate deeper awareness and harmony with Mother Earth, animals, and all life. As children, we were encouraged to share... how can we share more with our animal family? With trees and plants? With the waters? Modern human beings are disconnected from nature - cultivate an appreciation of 'wild' natural spaces and biodiversity.

This is a time to release patterns of competition and lack/greed, and cultivate cooperation and relationship.

We can simplify our lives and choose lighter footprint options every day. Let us love and take care of Mother Earth.

Homemade Body Butter

 

 

 

 

 

 

I tried some of Lauren Singer's awesome home-made recipes (also check our her "Trash is for Tossers" website):

Zero Waste Whipped Body Butter
Combine 4 organic ingredients in equal parts:
- coconut oil
- shea butter
- cocoa butter
- sweet almond oil
Directions:  Use a double boiler (or a stainless steel/glass bowl above a pot with hot water) to gently melt/blend all four ingredients together (just until melted, don't overheat).
Then place it in the fridge until the blend becomes solid, about an hour or more. 
Use a mixer to whip the mixture until it becomes like a 'whipped' body butter consistency.
While mixing, add desired essential oils (eg., 5 drops essential oil, eg., orange. lavendar, etc).
Put the body butter into a glass jar, and enjoy : )
Note:  If you don't like the 'chocolatey' smell, tweak the recipe to use less cocoa butter and more shea butter.

I would also like to find a body cream recipe that uses more locally sourced ingredients.

 

 

Homemade Toothpaste

 

Zero Waste Toothpaste

Combine 2 tablespoons organic coconut oil with 1 tablespoon of baking soda, and 15-20 drops of organic essential oil (eg., peppermint, spearmint).
Stir together in a glass jar until smooth (I used a chopstick to stir).
Note: It doesn't foam up and may taste 'saltier' than you're used to. If it hardens put the glass jar under some warm water to soften, and if it’s too soft, place it in fridge or a cool spot for a little while.
